How to beat high grocery prices and still maintain quality

Save-A-LotWith the price of gasoline in Southern Nevada heading toward $3 a gallon for regular unleaded, and interest prices plus bank fees on the rise, the one way to cut expenses is to spend less for groceries each week.

Where can you buy milk for $2.29 a gallon, large eggs for 69 cents a dozen, or avocados three for a dollar? Well, there’s a new store in town that has some price surprises on meat, produce, dairy and frozen foods. It’s Save-A-Lot, in the Rancho Plaza Shopping Center, 703 N. Rancho Dr. It’s on the west side of Rancho Drive between Bonanza Road and Washington Avenue.

In fresh produce, we bought bananas at 29 cents a pound, cantaloupe at 48 cents a pound, and a box of very ripe California strawberries for 50 cents.

In canned goods, we selected halved apricots from Modesto, California for 89 cents, baked beans with maple-cured bacon for 59 cents, and Texas-style beans for 49 cents.
Among soups, at 49 and 59 cents each, we chose tomato, cream of mushroom, cream of chicken, and bean with bacon.

Other bargains we pulled off the shelf: raspberry preserves $1.29, StarKist solid white albacore tuna (in water) at 99 cents a can, raisin bran cereal (20 ounces) at $1.89, Libby sliced peaches in a 29-ounce can, $1.29 and Armour sliced hard salami, eight ounces, $1.99.

McDaniel’s Old World Classic gourmet blend instant coffee, eight-ounce jar, $2.29, turned out to have a good taste but not excellent or outstanding.

The bargains enunciated come to us from Save-A-Lot Stores, Inc. of Earth City, Mo. The store has a philosophy:

  • Focused selection: We carry a complete selection of groceries, but only the most popular items and sizes, which gives us more buying power and delivers greater savings.

  • No frills: Fancy shelving and flower beds drive up prices. So we don’t have them.

  • Smaller stores: We don’t pay for expensive real estate and neither should you.

  • Low overhead: Lobster tanks and sushi bars can be expensive, so we don’t pay for them. We pass the savings on to you.

Albertson’s or Vons it’s not. But Save-A-Lot, open Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., gives the customer the luxury of stretching grocery dollars up to 40 percent.
